'Baragatan' is a local Cuyonon word meaning 'coming together'. Every June, the Baragatan festival draws people of different cultures from all over the Palawan archipelago. Muslims, Christians and indigenous people alike come together in Puerto Princesa to sell their wares and join the cultural festivities.
The climax of the two-week festival is a street dancing contest that celebrates island traditions and stories of long ago. Dancers cavort through the streets, their bodies covered in charcoal and anyel, a native indigo dye.
