Tubbataha Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the heart of the coral triangle, the area with the highest marine biodiversity on earth. The reefs were fished sustainably for hundreds of years by local Cagayanon and Samal people but were seriously damaged by intensive and destructive fishing during the 1980/90s. Tubbataha is now a marine protected area and, since 1997, the World Wildlife Fund has been conducting annual research trips to monitor corals, fish, seagrasses and marine mammals. This research has documented the reefs’ gradual recovery from over-fishing
